Injury has ruled 1997 Martell Grand National winner Lord Gyllene out of the Cheltenham Festival - but connections are hopeful that he will be fit enough to attempt to regain his Aintree crown on April 10th.

The 11-year-old's trainer Steve Brookshaw said: "During routine work over the weekend Lord Gyllene pulled a muscle behind the saddle and so will only be walking for the next 10 days - therefore he will not be going to Cheltenham."

Brookshaw added that the intention is to look for another race before the Liverpool showpiece and a trip over hurdles is a possibility. The trainer was philosophical over the setback. "We noticed it after he had worked and the vet said we shouldn't have anyone on his back for the next 10 days," he added.

Lord Gyllene's 1997 victory was achieved in the famous Monday Grand National.
