National League Preview: Shamrock Rovers have stepped back from the abyss after an agreement was reached between the club board and the players' union, the PFAI, over outstanding wages, allowing tonight's clash with Drogheda United togo ahead (kick-off 7 p.m.).

The PFAI negotiated a deal with the board detailing a pay schedule for outstanding wages owed to the players, which was signed yesterday.

Rovers' chairman Tony Maguire was delighted the problem had been solved. "The union were very professional in their negotiations and also understanding of our position," he said. "They could have demanded all the money immediately and the simple fact is we don't have it. We now have some time to make sure get the finances in place."

Maguire also admitted Rovers cannot continue in the current circumstances unless there are solid plans for the completion of the stadium project in Tallaght. "It is well known we are speaking to an investor at the moment and the simple truth is that any plans for next season are dependent on a starting and finishing date for Tallaght being agreed upon. If we don't have that, we will need different structures to survive next season regarding players' wages and ground rental."

Rovers are without a recognised striker this evening with Trevor Molloy, David Mooney (both suspended) and Stephen Grant (concussion) ruled out.

Drogheda, meanwhile, will be without striker Declan O'Brien (groin).

Elsewhere, Cork City will be aiming to make it six wins in a row when they face St Patrick's Athletic at Turner's Cross (kick-off 7.45 p.m.). Their recent run has made Cork the only real rivals to Shelbourne's dominance this season and, with a game in hand and a clash at Tolka Park to come, Cork are quietly plotting a title challenge. Kevin Doyle is Cork's only concern with a thigh problem, though he is likely to continue in an unchanged side.

Bohemians will also be hoping to breathe life into their faltering title challenge with a victory over former manager Stephen Kenny's Derry City at Dalymount Park (kick-off 7.45 p.m.).

Although it would take nothing short of a miracle for them to win the title, Bohemians are desperate for points to ensure European qualification for next season and player-manager Gareth Farrelly is expected to juggle his squad after five punishing games in 15 days. Farrelly must decide whether to pick himself in midfield while club captain Kevin Hunt is back in contention after recovering from a virus.

Derry will be without Seán Hargan (foot) while Killian Brennan (foot) is a major doubt.
