Golf:Former world number one Greg Norman reeled in overnight leader Fred Funk with a fine six-under-par 64 to open up a one-shot lead going into the final round of the Senior British Open at Sunningdale in Surrey.

The 54-year-old Australian, nicknamed 'The Shark', started the day seven shots behind pacesetter Funk but took a narrow lead with a 10-under tally of 200, while the American (72) faltered in relatively easy conditions.

The two-time Open winner, who has been on the wrong end of many a famous comebacks over the years, has led eight times after 54 holes in major championships — most recently last year’s Open at Royal Birkdale — but only once converted that into a victory, the 1986 Open at Turnberry.

“I didn’t expect Fred to come backwards, to be honest,” said Norman.

“I was driving the ball well; I could see the shots I wanted on the tee so I just went and played them.

“Any time you shoot a low round on a Saturday you usually do get into contention.”

American Loren Roberts compiled another solid round in 67 to be tied second alongside Funk.

Zimbabwean-born Irish passport holder Mark McNulty was tied sixth on six-under after a 68, the same mark as twice US Masters champion Bernhard Langer.

Denis O’Sullivan (70) was one-under, five better than Des Smyth (74).

Ian Woosnam (70) and Sandy Lyle (69) were on 207 with six-times major champion Nick Faldo trailing on 209.

Zimbabwean Denis Watson returned a 66 to lie two behind the leader, while former European Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance (71) and 1987 US Masters champion Larry Mize (64) were a further shot back.

Tom Watson, 59, runner-up in last week's British Open at Turnberry, carded a 70 for 206.
