ONE of Beaverstown’s youngest members, 10-year-old Seán Dowling, performed exceptionally well last week in the US Kids European Championship which was played in Craigielaw Golf Club, East Lothian, Scotland. Around 500 from around the world competed for the individual European Champion titles as well as for places at the US Kids Golf World Championship in Pinehurst later this year.

Dowling competed in the 10-year-old section with 53 other boys, 35 of whom were international players from outside the UK and Ireland. After the first day of competition he shot a solid 80 gross and was lying in seventh position, while on day two he shot an 84 which was the fourth best score of the day.

He completed his final round in 79 shots to finish fifth overall. His efforts earned him a small replica trophy of the claret jug, while his top-five finish gives him an automatic entry into this year’s World Championship in Pinehurst in August.

Dowling only joined Beaverstown last year and last summer his handicap went from 28 to 17 in the space of six weeks. He also won the 25th anniversary Junior Silver medal last year and was also selected Young Member of the year in 2010.
