Impossible as it is to bet against Colin Montgomerie once he gets to Wentworth - he has won the last two Volvo PGA Championships there, as well as last year's world matchplay (IMG version) - the sheer quality of the field for this week's Volvo PGA Championship means the Scot won't have it all his own way.

Although installed as 5 to 1 favourite, which is about right, Montgomerie will have to fend off Europe's best if he is to retain the crown. Lee Westwood (10 to 1) and Darren Clarke (14 to 1) are his nearest challengers in the betting stakes, but a couple of players on offer at 25 to 1 are even more appealing.

Now that Padraig Harrington has got the Belfry blues out of his system and put in quite a solid performance in Germany at the weekend, the Irishman - priced at 25 to 1 - returns to a course where he reached the semi-final stage of the world matchplay last year (before losing to Montgomerie). Obviously in form, Harrington should have a fair old crack at one of the most prized titles on the European circuit.

Likewise, Jean Van de Velde is in excellent form at present, and his stint in the United States appears to have brought him onto another level. Also priced at 25 to 1, the Frenchman could be worth a few bob this week. So, Harrington and Van de Velde - both at 25 to 1, both eachway - could be a useful investment.
