GOLF: Geoff Ogilvy and Vijay Singh both shot eight birdies in their opening rounds of 64 to share the lead after the first round of the Buick Challenge at the Callaway Gardens Resort yesterday.
Ogilvy set the early pace when he went to the turn in six under par 30 and two more birdies on the homeward journey brought him back in 34. Singh covered both nines in four under par 32 with dropping a shot.
Five players, including Sweden's Per Ulrik Johansson share second place on 65.
HURLING: There is to be little in the way of a winter break for the hurlers of Limerick, Waterford and Clare.
With Croke Park having dropped their interest in the Waterford Crystal Tournament, it has now been taken on board by the Munster Council, with three counties participating and the first match between Waterford and Limerick scheduled for Sunday week.
In a new departure, it has been decided to have the competition played on a home and away basis with the final in December.
SQUASH: A sterling performance from Derek Ryan in yesterday's last 16 play-offs at the World Team Squash Championships in Melbourne failed to dent the Canadian opposition and Ireland failed to win through to the quarter-finals. Ryan notched up two decisive game wins before eventually losing out 9-7, 1-9, 9-7, 2-9, 9-4. In the other ties, Liam Kennedy lost 2-9, 9-0, 9-5, 9-0 and Steve Richardson conceded in the final tie with the score 9-7, 9-7.
ATHLETICS: American Olympic sprinter Jon Drummond was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday on suspicion of smuggling marijuana, police said. Drummond was released on bail of $20,000 pending further charges.
