John Daly sank deeper into golf's yawning abyss when he took six putts at the final green during the first round at the Memorial tournament in Dublin, Ohio, before withdrawing from the event.

Daly half-heartedly slapped at the ball several times before finally sinking his sixth putt for a 10 on the par-four hole, the highest score on the hole in the tournament's history.

He signed for a 10-over-par 82 then promptly withdrew from the event, the second time he has done so in the past three tournaments.

Lee Janzen shot a seven-under-par 65 to take a two-stroke lead. But his thunder was almost stolen by Sergio Garcia, who continued his amazing progress by firing a 67.
