We almost expected the ghost of Old Tom Morris to emerge on the 18th green at St Andrews on the eve of the millennium British Open over the old course. It didn't appear, of course, but there were plenty of wobbly knees and creaking joints to remind us of times past.

Slammin' Sam - the original of the species, aka Sam Snead - stole the show in the Past Champions' Challenge. The 88-year-old was chauffeur driven around in an electric buggy by his son Jack and showed an ability to hit shots that many from a younger generation can only dream about.

And then there was Tony Jacklin finally driving the 18th green after 40 years of trying. The whole occasion, however, brought a feel-good factor to the week.
