HEED the whispers and back Sleepytime to make a winning debut at Sandown today. It is an open secret that Henry Cecil's filly has. been burning up the gallops at Newmarket to the effect that some punters have already made a long-term investment on the daughter of Royal Academy.
She has this week been the subject of a £1,000 bet at odds of 20 to 1 to triumph in the 1,000 Guineas next spring. If that sort of support means anything, defeat ought to be out of the question in the Grass Widows Maiden at the Esher track.
Sleepytime certainly has the right credentials on paper as she's a sister to stable companion Ali-Royal, winner of a Listed race this year. She won't be a fancy price but she should win.
Cecil ought also to be on the mark with Torremolinos in the Kennington Oval Maiden. Placed in the United States as a juvenile, he made a pleasing British debut at York when finishing just over tour lengths third of 12 to Mohawk River, travelling strongly until the chips were down in the final furlong and a half.
That looks like pretty solid form and Torremolinos makes more appeal than Congo Man and Enriched, who still have much to prove.
Adventurous punters may like to consider Misty View in the End of Season Apprentice Handicap. John White's mare was placed over hurdles last month and is worth an each-way punt to make the front four at a fancy price.
At Beverley, River Of Fortune can gain a richly-deserved success in the Tattersalls Auction Maiden. Mark Tompkins's filly has had no luck and would have opened her account at Thirsk last time but for coming up against David Loder's Rose Carnival, who is probably an above-average sort at this grade.
The End of Season Maiden is appropriately named as 15 sprinters line up desperate for a win of any kind. Side with Present Imperfect who shaped quite well when a slow-starting ninth of 14 to Disputed on her Newmarket debut. Ian Balding's filly has more scope than most of this ragged bunch.
