SCHOOLS' RUGBY/Connacht Junior Cup Semi-finals: Sligo Grammar School ran out 9-7 winners after being given a severe examination by newly formed St Attracta's CS, Tubbercurry, in the Connacht Schools' Junior Cup semi-final at the Grammar School grounds yesterday.
Grammar join the school's senior side in pursuit of a unique double but at times yesterday the juniors looked as if they might be bowing out. Outhalf Ross Butler scored all of his team's points.
But for St Attracta's, who were formed only six months ago, to reach semi-final under the guidance of Jean Connell was a magnificient achievement.
In yesterday's other semi-final Garbally, Ballinasloe had a convincing 31-7 victory over Colaiste Iognaid, Galway at Garbally.
The victors went ahead after 24 minutes when they were awarded a penalty try after it had been deemed that full back Marcus O'Neill had been impeded in his attempt to score a try. Winger Patrick Birch added extra points with his conversion.
Garbally went further ahead just before half-time when Birch slipped through the cover for a try. Again he added the points which left Garbally leading by 14-0 at half-time and the trend continued in the second half.
