Dermot Weld and Pat Smullen captured the honours at the Curragh before a crowd of 3,500 on Saturday when they recorded a treble highlighted by the comprehensive victory of Two-Twenty-Two in the Group 3 Tetrarch Stakes over seven furlongs.
With Mick Kinane successfully teaming up with Aidan O'Brien's King Of Kings at Newmarket, Smullen wasted no time in deputising for the former champion aboard Camargo to initiate his three-timer and the stable's first juvenile winner of the new campaign. Camargo sprinted clear inside the final furlong to defeat Flip The Switch by a smooth four lengths in the opener.
After the £3,400 guineas Goffs purchase started the afternoon on a bright note for the Rosewell House handler, Two-Twenty-Two, which started the 8 to 11 favourite, annihilated his three opponents in the feature to provide Weld with his fourth Tetrarch success, his last coming courtesy of Blue Shuffle 11 years ago.
After taking up the running at the halfway stage, he stayed on resolutely to come home unchallenged by six lengths from Chateau Royal and Christy Roche.
"I'm very pleased with that performance. He's a fit horse but I'll have talk to his owner Mr Haefner (Moyglare Stud Farm) to see if he's agreeable to go for the Irish 2,000 Guineas," said Weld, bearing in mind the outcome of the first classic of the season in Newmarket won so emphatically by King Of Kings. Stage Affair enjoyed a similar wide margin victory in the Mooresbridge Stakes after heading stable-companion Celtic Lore four furlongs from home and staying on well for the Offaly-born rider to score in good style.
"He is much stronger now and was working very well at home," remarked the Curragh handler of Michael Smurfit's son of Theatrical before nominating the Tattersalls Gold Cup back at the Curragh on Saturday May 24th as the next assignment.
