An attempt by clubs from the National League to re-assert their authority in the dispute involving St Patrick's Athletic and the FAI failed yesterday when members of the association's Board of Management ruled that the matter should be sorted out within the recommended mechanisms of the organisation.

Shelbourne, who supported yesterday's moves, are now believed to favour a compromise deal under which St Patrick's would be docked only three points rather than the nine point penalty imposed by the FAI's Appeals Committee for playing Paul Marney in three league games while the midfielder was unregistered.

It is believed the league's management committee will now discuss the issue on Monday night.
