A round-up of today's other stories in brief
Recovering Bolton star tweets thanks to fans for support
FABRICE MUAMBA has thanked fans for their support as the first picture of the Bolton midfielder since his on-field collapse against Tottenham appeared on his Twitter feed.
The picture was posted on the 23-year-old’s behalf on the social networking site.
The accompanying message read: “Fab wanted me to post this pic for you all and to also say thank you for such overwhelming support.”
The FA Cup quarter-final at White Hart Lane was abandoned after Muamba collapsed having suffered a cardiac arrest. He was “effectively dead” for 78 minutes but has since made progress.
Muamba still has a long recovery ahead of him and Peter Weissberg, the medical director of the British Heart Foundation, cast doubt over the likelihood of the former England Under-21 international playing professionally again.
Arsenal chief to appeal ban
ARSENAL MANAGER Arsene Wenger will appeal against his “unjust” three-match Uefa touchline ban and €40,000 fine.
Wenger faced a charge of improper conduct relating to the Gunners’ Champions League tie against AC Milan at the Emirates Stadium on March 6th.
Wenger confronted referee Damir Skomina following the 3-0 win, which meant a 4-3 aggregate defeat, taking issue with the Slovenian official on the pitch after the final whistle and criticising him in his post-match comments, claiming there were too many free-kicks awarded to the Italians.
It is the third time in the space of a year that Wenger has been given a touchline ban by Uefa.
Ireland keep their hopes of regaining title alive
Rep of Ireland 1 Scotland 1: THE REPUBLIC of Ireland kept alive their hopes of landing the five-team Under-18 Centenary Schools Shield by drawing with Scotland last night at the Waterford RSC.
Waterford United striker Seán Maguire fired Ireland ahead on the stroke of half-time after Danny Morrissey’s left-wing cross set him up.
It took just over a minute of the second half for the Scots to equalise, as Lawrence Shankland was afforded too much time and space 10 yards out to beat Evan Comerford with a low drive.
Victory in their final two games of the campaign against Wales (April 12th) and England (April 16th), both away from home, will see Ireland regain the annual shield.
