Maradona formally appointed

DIEGO MARADONA has been officially appointed coach of Argentina, the football association said yesterday.

Maradona was shown by national television arriving at the Argentina FA's training camp and a spokesman said he would begin his reign by announcing the squad for the November 19th friendly against Scotland. The decision had been expected for a week after Maradona, one of the world's greatest players ever players but also one of the most controversial, said he was on the brink of being given the job.

Maradona takes over from Alfio Basile who quit last month after an embarrassing World Cup qualifying defeat to Chile.

Corcoran reacts to pull out threats

MILO CORCORAN has reacted to the suggestion by officials of the Irish League's two biggest clubs that they might pull out of the Setanta Sports Cup if changes are not made by raising the idea that they might easily be replaced by other Northern clubs, writes Emmet Malone.

"Both clubs have contributed greatly to the competition," said Corcoran , whose resignation from the position of chair of the organising committee was called for by Glentoran's Aubry Ralph last week. "I hope they do not opt out, but it is an invitational tournament and other clubs from the Irish League would be delighted to take their place."

DROGHEDA UNITED have confirmed they will appeal the deduction of 10 points imposed by the FAI's Independent Licensing Committee on Monday night. The loss of the points, if confirmed, will mean the club can not qualify to play European football next season.

"We're not in this position through any fault of our own," said club chairman Vincent Hoey.

FA charge Keane with improper conduct

SUNDERLAND BOSS Roy Keane has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association after being sent to the stands during Saturday's 5-0 defeat at Chelsea.

Keane was asked to leave the dugout by match referee Martin Atkinson after he had questioned a series of decisions in the tunnel at half-time as his side was put to the sword at Stamford Bridge.

An FA statement said: "Sunderland manager Roy Keane has been charged with improper conduct.

"The charge relates to his conduct towards referee Martin Atkinson in the tunnel at half-time of Sunderland's match against Chelsea on Saturday, 1 November.

"Keane has until 19 November to respond to the charge."

If found guilty, Keane, who has demonstrated a remarkable calm throughout his managerial career to date, could face a touchline ban.
