A round-up of today's soccer news
Dida banned, Celtic fined
Milan's goalkeeper Dida has been banned for two Champions League matches after his theatrical reaction to being tapped by a Celtic supporter at the end of last week's match at Parkhead.
The goalkeeper collapsed spectacularly after the incident with the spectator who ran on the pitch to celebrate Scott McDonald's 90th-minute winner.
Celtic, as expected, received a fine after a three-hour meeting of the Uefa control and disciplinary body for failing to control their supporters and a lack of organisation.
Dida had initially attempted to chase the supporter, making his actions appear all the more ridiculous. He was taken from the field on a stretcher and, with Milan unable to provide a satisfactory reason for Dida's substitution, Uefa implemented disciplinary proceedings on the basis that "member associations, clubs, as well as their players, officials and members, shall conduct themselves according to the principles of loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship".
Celtic were fined €35,000, with half suspended for two years. The club will not appeal.
The supporter, Robert McHendry, has been banned by the club from attending future Celtic matches and has been charged at Glasgow Sheriff Court with breach of the peace.
Dida is now set to miss his club's back-to-back Champions League matches against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Milan last night said they would appeal.
Terry to miss Estonia game
England captain John Terry has been ruled out of tomorrow's Euro 2008 qualifier with Estonia.
Terry pulled up in training on Wednesday and went for a scan on the injury yesterday afternoon. Although the damage is not thought to be too bad, it is enough for coach Steve McClaren to rule him out of the Wembley encounter, although the Chelsea defender could figure in Wednesday's meeting with Russia in Moscow.
Terry would probably have missed the Estonia game anyway, as a yellow card would have ruled him out of the far more onerous encounter with Russia.
Caldwell ruled out
Scotland defender Gary Caldwell has been ruled out of the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Ukraine and Georgia.
Caldwell suffered a knee injury during Celtic's 2-1 victory over Gretna on Sunday and was known to be a major doubt for tomorrow's game against Ukraine at Hampden.
Lee's future in doubt
Sammy Lee's position at Bolton Wanderers was looking increasingly fragile last night as the club's board contemplated the repercussions of his falling-out with Gary Speed. Phil Gartside, the Bolton chairman, was deeply unimpressed that Lee had alienated a consummate professional such as Speed and that concern was shared by the club's owner, Eddie Davies.
Speed relinquished his duties as first-team coach yesterday after a series of arguments culminated in him being left out of the squad, along with the captain Kevin Nolan, for Sunday's 1-0 defeat against Chelsea.
Lee is now facing something approaching mutiny among his players, many of whom sympathise with Speed, and Nolan, and have expressed their concerns to an exasperated Gartside. The chairman in turn has spoken to Davies about how much longer they should give a manager who has taken only five points from nine Premier League games.
Givens includes Stokes
Anthony Stokes will be back in Republic of Ireland colours when he starts for the under-21 side in tonight's friendly meeting with Sweden in Uppsala (5.30pm).
The Sunderland striker has been handed a roaming role by manager Don Givens. Stokes controversially missed an under-21 friendly meeting with Germany in August and was left out of the following tie against Portugal.
Givens insists all is back to normal with the 19-year-old Dubliner. "It's business as usual between us. I told him the slate was clean and that I want him to go out there and show how good a player he is."
Givens has handed debuts to Norwich's versatile teenager Michael Spillane in defence and Everton striker Aidan Downes.
REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: D Randolph (Charlton); E Nolan (Blackburn), S O'Halloran (Aston Villa), M Spillane (Norwich), D O'Dea (Celtic), P Cregg (Falkirk), O Garvan (Ipswich), S Quinn (Sheffield Utd), A Stokes (Sunderland), J O'Brien (Celtic), A Downes (Everton).
In Brief . . .
The English FA have confirmed referee Rob Styles will face no further sanctions for his display in the Premier League match between Liverpool and Chelsea in August. Styles had already been dropped from the Premier League list for one game after incorrectly giving Chelsea a penalty at Anfield. Chelsea have officially confirmed Henk ten Cate as assistant coach at Stamford Bridge . . . Neil Warnock was yesterday named as the new manager of Crystal Palace.
