Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has opted not to lodge an official complaint over alleged remarks made by Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton during Monday night's match at St James' Park.
Reports this morning alleged that Barton made a racist comment during a confrontation involving the pair following a first-half foul.
However, Agbonlahor has told Villa manager Martin O'Neill that he does not want to take the issue to English Football Association disciplinary chiefs, meaning the matter is now effectively closed.
The FA earlier insisted the onus was on Villa to make a complaint if they felt the incident warranted one.
"We are aware of the rumours circulating but it is difficult to comment any further on something that has no further substance to it," they said in a statement.
"We take seriously any allegations of racist abuse and will obviously act accordingly if we receive any official complaint from Aston Villa."
It is the second time in two days that Barton has avoided potential disciplinary action over the incident during Newcastle's 2-0 victory.
Yesterday, the FA revealed the controversial midfielder would not suffer further action for flicking Agbonlahor's face during the same exchange.
