Liverpool defender Daniel Agger is likely to miss the rest of the season after manager Rafael Benitez revealed he must undergo surgery on a foot injury.

The Dane has struggled to recover from a metatarsal injury that was initially expected to keep him out for just six weeks.

"It's a blow for Daniel but we want to get his problem sorted," said Benitez today. "We have defensive cover and Martin Skrtel is playing very well. Daniel will be back for next season."

Liverpool were today drawn against Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-final and face a gruelling fixture list in the league with games against Chelsea, Manchester United, Everton and the Gunners fast approaching.
