Arsenal 0 Fenerbahce 0:Arsenal's Jekyll and Hyde season continued at the Emirates last night with a goalless draw against a side they put five past last time out. The last seven days have seen a demoralising draw against Tottenham, defeat at Stoke and now a Champions League stalemate despite creating the best chances against the Turkish visitors.
Robin van Persie came closest for the hosts when he struck the crossbar before the break.
Fenerbahce had done their homework and used their earliest opportunity to launch a long throw and cause problems in Arsenal's penalty area, as Rory Delap had done to such great effect for Stoke at the weekend.
The hosts should have taken the lead in the eighth minute when a careless pass from Roberto Carlos found its way to Cesc Fabregas, who lofted the ball over the Fenerbahce defence.
Van Persie was first to the pass, but his shot went just wide, injuring goalkeeper Volkan Demirel in the process.
Volkan was tested three minutes later when Aaron Ramsey, looking to build on his goal against Fenerbahce in Turkey, forced him to save at the near post.
The Fenerbahce goalkeeper then kept out Fabregas at full stretch, with Van Persie's rebound blocked by Diego Lugano.
Selcuk Sahin was booked for handball, then Roberto Carlos deflected Van Persie's resulting free-kick wide.
Roberto Carlos tried his luck from all of 50 yards but Fenerbahce's more likely route of success was on the counter attack when Arsenal moves broke down.
Stand-in skipper Kolo Toure, playing right back, started a move to create an opportunity for Van Persie just after the half-hour.
The Dutchman timed his run to collect Toure's pass beyond the last defender, turned inside and then arrowed his finish towards the top corner, with Demirel touching it on to the crossbar.
Gokhan Gonul finally forced Lukasz Fabianski into a save but the effort was heading wide any way.
Demirel then saved from Samir Nasri when the France youngster tried his luck from the edge of the area.
Lugano was booked just after the restart for a cynical challenge on Van Persie, with Toure's free-kick tipped over the crossbar.
Fenerbahce then broke, with Ugur Boral dragging a shot across the face of the goal when he got behind the Arsenal defence. Roberto Carlos also tried his luck yet again, with a trademark long-range free-kick.
Wenger made his move after an hour, unleashing Carlos Vela for Nicklas Bendtner, while Ramsey made way for Abou Diaby.
Fenerbahce coach Luis Aragones made a change as well, taking off former Sheffield United forward Kazim Kazim and bringing on Ali Bilgin.
Van Persie was the next to go close, heading over after Gael Clichy crossed from the left.
There was more frustration when Diaby headed over from close range when he met Van Persie's free-kick. Substitute Gokcek Vederson had been booked for foul to create the chance.
Van Persie himself received a booking for the next act in his battle with Lugano, while Semih Senturk was fortunate to escape sanction when he aimed an elbow at Mikael Silvestre, who was forced off and replaced by Alex Song.
