Everton 2 Wigan 1:David Moyes' side grabbed their first league points of the season thanks to an injury-time penalty from Leighton Baines after struggling to subdue a defiant Wigan.
Some of Wigan’s tackling — they picked up six bookings — enraged the Goodison Park faithful but it looked as if Roberto Martinez’s men were going to grab a point at least.
They led early in the second period through a Paul Scharner header before Louis Saha grabbed his fourth goal of the season to pull Everton level.
And the Toffees had to wait until the third minute of injury-time and Emmerson Boyce’s foul on Jo for Baines to have the chance to smash home the penalty winner.
Moyes confirmed after the game that the club have agreed a fee with Atletico Madrid for defender Johnny Heitinga.
The Toffees have offered €5.7million for the Dutchman, but Moyes admits there is still work to be done before the deal is finalised.
He said: “We have not as yet agreed personal terms. I hope we will be able to do that soon, but we have not as yet concluded that part of the move.”
Moyes unveiled two new signings in the win over Wigan, with Sylvain Distin and Russia winger Diniyar Bilyaletdinov both making their debuts.
