Former Republic of Ireland defender Stephen Carr has come out of retirement to sign a one-month contract with Birmingham City.
The 32-year-old has been without a club since leaving Newcastle in the summer but had been on trial with Blues for the past couple of weeks.
Manager Alex McLeish has now agreed a deal to sign the right-back and he will be able to face Crystal Palace tomorrow night subject to receiving confirmation from the Football League.
McLeish said: “We’ve been looking to strengthen the full-back position and are pleased to bring in Stephen as he brings with him great experience.
“He has not played for a while but there’s no doubt he is a quality player who can definitely bring something to the side once he is fully match fit.”
Carr, who began his career at Tottenham, has been capped 44 times for Ireland and played 107 times for Newcastle after a €2,280,000 move from Spurs in 2004.
He will join fellow Irish players Colin Doyle, Keith Fahey and Lee Carsley at Birmingham as they push for promotion to the Premier League.
McLeish’s side are currently four points behind leaders Wolves with a game in hand.
