England World Cup footballer Wayne Bridge was injured during a "disturbance" outside a nightclub, it emerged today.

Bridge, 25, who had reportedly been celebrating the end of the league season, suffered a head injury but did not go to hospital. Police were called to the the exclusive Embassy nightclub in London's Mayfair in the early hours of Monday morning.

The BBC said Bridge was thought to have been attending a private party with Chelsea and Arsenal players to celebrate the end of the season. He suffered a cut and bruise to his face, according to the report.

One man was held on suspicion of assault, while two others were arrested on suspicion of using racist language towards a police officer.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "At 2am on Monday, officers in central London went to a disturbance outside a nightclub on Old Burlington Street. A man suffered minor injuries to his head. London Ambulance Service attended but he refused further treatment. He did not go to hospital.

"A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and has been released on bail. Two further men were arrested on suspicion of using racist language and have also been bailed."

It is understood that no footballers were arrested.

Bridge, a Chelsea player who spent part of the season on loan at Fulham, was named as a defender in Sven-Goran Eriksson's provisional 23-man squad for this summer's World Cup in Germany.

His lawyer had no comment to make on the story.
