Celtic have signed Scott Brown from Hibernian in the biggest ever transfer between two Scottish clubs. The Scottish champions are believed to have agreed a fee in the region of £4.4million for the 21-year-old midfielder, who has signed a five-year deal.
Brown had also been linked with Rangers, Everton, Tottenham and Middlesbrough, with the latter having held talks with the player earlier this week. Despite those options, Brown insists the decision to remain in Scotland and sign for Celtic was an easy one to make.
"Everyone knows Celtic is one of the biggest names in football and the opportunity to join a club of Celtic's stature was one I had to take," he said.
"Celtic have enjoyed a great season, lifting the SPL Championship and making great progress in Europe. The club has a magnificent support and I will be doing all I can to make sure I play my part in delivering more and more success to these fans."
Brown added: "I would also like to thank Hibernian FC and the Hibs fans for all they have done for me.
"I have enjoyed my time immensely playing for Hibernian for a number of years and have nothing but praise for the club and its staff and supporters.
"I wish everyone involved with Hibernian the very best for the future."
Celtic manager Gordon Strachan is tipping Brown to live up to the hefty price tag and be a success at his new club next season.
The previous record fee between two Scottish clubs was the £4 million Rangers paid Dundee United for Duncan Ferguson in 1993.
Strachan said: "We are delighted to have signed Scott and are excited about him joining us next season.
"He has all the attributes to be a great Celtic player and I am sure he will enjoy teaming up with the other players at the club as we try to bring more success to our supporters.
"I would also like to thank the Celtic board for their support in bringing Scott to Celtic."
