Carsley to sit out Denmark game

Having experimented on the summer tour to America, Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton has returned to what is by and large a more familiar squad selection ahead of Wednesday's international friendly against Denmark in Aarhus.

However, Birmingham goalkeeper Colin Doyle, Wolves midfielder Darren Potter, striker Andy Keogh, also of Wolves, and Sunderland frontman Daryl Murphy all retain their places in the 23-man selection having impressed when debuting in games against Ecuador and Bolivia on that tour.

Other than that there is nothing remarkable about Staunton's selection, although goalkeeper Shay Given and winger Damien Duff do miss out through injury. Duff, of course, continues his rehabilitation from a foot injury and the manager had already ruled the Newcastle player out of the remaining Euro 2008 qualifiers.

Given is nursing a groin problem but Staunton reaffirmed his believe that his vice-captain could be fit ahead of the crucial away games against Slovakia on September 8th and the Czech Republic four days later.

Doyle is likely to replace Given in Aarhus, although Staunton refused to speculate today. Of the three goalkeepers selected - Nick Colgan and Wayne Henderson are the other two - Corkman Doyle is the only one playing in the Premiership and Staunton kept a close eye on the 22-year-old when attending Birmingham's game with Sunderland last night.

Paddy Kenny, the Sheffield United goalkeeper with seven caps who had been left out of previous squads for personal reasons, is not included.

Everton's Lee Carsley - recalled to the Irish fold in dramatic circumstances following the Cyprus debacle - is omitted from this squad but Staunton confirmed the midfielder would feature in next month's games.

"Lee wasn't going to play in this game and I had a chat with him," Staunton said. "I didn't see the point in him travelling just to sit around and watch the lads play. He understands the situation. We've got to give other players experience in that position because if Lee gets injured in the next week or so we'll be left short in that position."

Indeed, Wednesday's game affords Staunton his final opportunity to tinker with selection ahead of the Slovakia game but the manager concedes the exercise is as much about reintegrating players following their summer break.

The manner in which some his players - particularly Paul McShane and Stephen Ireland - have hit the ground running this season has impressed him but Staunton would not be drawn on which games he has attended over the opening week or so. However, it is believed both of Sunderland's games and Wolves' match with Watford were on his agenda.

"Some of the lads have started the season well with their clubs," he said. "If others are doing the business and I think they're right for the squad we'll put them in. The plan is to give players more experience. There's a lot in the squad who only have a handful of caps. We'll be looking to give them some sort of a game but also to get them focused again on how we want to play in September.

"Denmark is a warm-up game for us, putting into players' heads different thoughts about what will happen next month," he said. "They're all looking forward to it. I'm sure a few players are disappointed not to be in this squad but that's not to say the same players will be in the squad in September. I'll be keeping an open mind as usual."

Charlton's Andy Reid, Stephen Carr of Newcastle and new Wolves striker Stephen Elliot all return to the fold following injury. Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison and new Bolton Wanderers defender Andy O'Brien are both overlooked once again.  Anthony Stokes, Stephen O'Halloran and Stephen Gleeson all featured in the United States but were selected in Don Givens' under-21 squad earlier this week for Tuesday's game against Germany in Furth.

Should Kevin Kilbane makes his 81st international appearance next week he will leapfrog Packie Bonner to become Ireland's fifth most capped player of all-time.

Staunton will hope his selections survive weekend club games and arrive injury-free at the team base in Portmarnock on Sunday evening. The squad will then train in Malahide on Monday and Tuesday morning before departing for Denmark later that day.
