Celtic have missed out on the chance to sign Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, despite, apparently, both sides' best efforts to pull the move off.

Manager Gordon Strachan wanted the 34-year-old striker to replace recently departed John Hartson and was in Amsterdam on Monday to discuss a move to Parkhead with the player.

The former Middlesbrough, Chelsea and Leeds striker wanted to join the Bank of Scotland Premier League and CIS Insurance Cup winners as they look ahead to the Champions League.

But despite the player's willingness to drop his wage demands, the club still could not do a deal. His agent Humphry Nijman told said today: "Jimmy won't be joining Celtic.

"Jimmy would have loved to have played for Celtic but one thing is for sure, we did all we can to do it, and Gordon Strachan also tried his best to get Jimmy.

"It was a move both parties wanted but we were not able to come to an agreement so that is the end of it.

"Jimmy really tried to go there and was really willing to get his wages to a level we both thought would make that possible but we were not able to reach an agreement.

"We have three Premiership clubs interested in him and we will be speaking to them now."

Alan Thompson, meanwhile, fears Celtic's gruelling world tour could jeopardise their hopes of silverware this season.

The midfielder spoke as the players moved from Warsaw to Krakow on the latest leg of a marathon tour which takes them to the United States next week then Japan between the first and second games of the new Bank of Scotland Premier League season.

Gordon Strachan's team also have friendlies at home against Everton and Manchester United and a trip to Chelsea.

Thompson said: "I don't know what input, if any, the manager had when the schedule was put together but it does seem particularly long.

"Going to Japan isn't ideal and our complete programme seems too much."

But the 32-year-old is not complaining after having slipped out of favour under Strachan last season.

Thompson said: "You simply can't let any of it have an effect on you.

"There must be no toys coming out of anyone's pram while we understand that this is what we are paid to do, even if it's far from ideal.

"I shouldn't really be complaining about going to Japan in any case, because I'm more likely to get a full 90 minutes there against Yokohama Marinos than I am in a league game."
