Cristiano Ronaldo’s double took him past 500 career goals and handed Real Madrid a 2-0 Champions League victory over Malmo in Sweden.
The Portugal international struck after 29 minutes and then at the death to claim victory in Sweden and maintain his side’s perfect start to their Group A campaign.
In the process, Ronaldo, who started the night with 499 goals to his name, equalled Raul’s club record of 323 and will now hope to surpass that mark in Sunday’s Madrid derby. Swedish champions Malmo, who had defender Yoshimar Yotun sent off for a second bookable offence late on, remained in the game until the final minute, but ultimately emerged empty-handed.
‘Second goal’
In the other Group A game, Paris St Germain defeated Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0 in Ukraine.
Serge Aurier got himself on the end of Maxwell’s cross in the seventh minute to put Laurent Blanc’s side in the lead, before being key to his side’s second goal, flicking on a corner for David Luiz to double their advantage. Zlatan Ibrahimovic ensured the result by forcing Darijo Srna into scoring an own-goal as the match approached stoppage time.
In Group C, Benfica seized control when they fought back from a goal down to secure an impressive 2-1 win at 2014 runners-up Atletico Madrid.
Angel Correa fired Atletico ahead in the 23rd minute at the Calderon.
Nicolas Gaitan levelled for the visitors in the 36th minute, smashing a first-time shot through a crowd of players, and teenager Goncalo Guedes made it 2-1 six minutes into the second half when he converted a Gaitan cross at the far post.
Astana and Galatasaray each have one point after they drew 2-2 in Kazakhstan earlier in the day.
