Champions League Round up: Frank Lampard scored a late penalty but it was all in vain as Chelsea drew 1-1 with Barcelona at the Nou Camp to lose 3-2 on aggregate and with it end their Champions League campaign for another year.
The Blues needed a victory in Catalonia, but in a largely uneventful second-round encounter it was Barca who progressed.
With 12 minutes to go Ronaldinho side-stepped two challenges on the edge of the box before firing home a right-footed shot which flew past Petr Cech.
But Frank Lampard converted a stoppage-time penalty after John Terry was brought down in the area by Giovanni van Bronckhorst to level the scores at 1-1.
Early on Lionel Messi linked up well with Samuel Eto'o to create an opening for Thiago Motta but his low drive was easily saved by Cech. Messi then limped out of the action midway through the first half after an accidental collision with Arjen Robben.
Victor Valdes saved from Robben and Joe Cole came close to giving the visitors the lead, two minutes before half-time. John Terry nodded a free-kick from Paulo Ferreira into the goalmouth. Cole lifted it over Valdes but it dropped onto the top of the net.
In the second half Cole swung over a cross from the right which substitute Hernan Crespo side-footed just wide of the near post. Eto'o later tested Cech with a smart low shot and on 83 minutes he hit the post as Barcelona powered forward.
Rangers came agonisingly close to booking a place in the quarter-finals only for their European dream to come to an end at Villarreal.
The Scottish champions had hoped Peter Lovenkrands’ 12th-minute strike would provide the win that would see them defy all the odds to progress to the last eight. But a Rodolfo Arruabarrena leveller just four minutes into the second half saw the Spanish side win the tie on away goals, with an aggregate score of 3-3.
Juventus had to come from behind to beat Werder Bremen 2-1 to advance to the quarter final on the away goals rule after a dreadful late blunder by German goalkeeper Tim Wiese gifted the Italians victory.
With the score at 1-1 on the night and two minutes to go Wiese, who had been outstanding until then, fumbled a harmless cross and Brazilian Emerson slotted the ball into an unguarded goal to make the aggregate score 4-4 and put Juve through.
