Manchester City 2 Bayern Munich 0:Manchester City's maiden Champions League campaign came to an end tonight despite a convincing win over an under-strength Bayern Munich.
David Silva and Yaya Toure struck as City produced a fine attacking display to keep their slim hopes of qualifying from Group A alive but Napoli’s defeat of Villarreal in Spain undid them.
The results mean City will now be competing in the second-tier Europa League in the new year and the latter stages at the Etihad Stadium were played out in a muted atmosphere.
Sergio Aguero spurned a chance to give City an early lead when he met Samir Nasri’s sixth-minute cross, only to send his header over the bar from a few yards out.
At the other end, Ivica Olic brought a save out of Joe Hart with a drive the England international managed to push around the post.
The hosts thought they were in front on the quarter-hour mark when Silva sent a free-kick from the left dipping straight into the net, but Joleon Lescott was adjudged to have impeded goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt as the ball went in and the effort was disallowed.
Moments later, a deflected ball into the City box made its way to David Alaba, who could not get his attempt on target.
Butt failed to properly clear a corner in the 28th minute but, after Gareth Barry nodded the ball back into the danger zone, Nasri was unable to get much power on his own header towards goal.
Silva showed much greater potency eight minutes before the break, latching on to a deft lay-off from Edin Dzeko and firing past Butt into the corner from the edge of the area.
Aguero nearly made it 2-0 soon after but saw former City defender Jerome Boateng sliding in to block his strike.
City continued to pour forward and after Silva fired a shot at Butt, the ball came to Barry, who lifted it over the bar. Aguero then tried to curl the ball across Butt but the effort went wide.
Bayern had the first attempt of the second half, with Danijel Pranjic roaming forward before shooting the wrong side of the post.
City were soon back on the offensive though, with Silva bringing down a long ball for Dzeko, who could not stop his shot rising too fast.
Soon after, the hosts had a two-goal cushion after passing their way through the Bayern defence in the 52nd minute.
Yaya Toure started the move and, following touches from Aguero and Dzeko, the Ivorian finished it by sliding the ball past Butt.
As Pranjic skewed wide, everything appeared to be going according to plan for City, but news then filtered through that Napoli were 1-0 up in Spain.
Unable to do anything else about the situation, Mancini’s men kept attacking, with Barry rifling in a shot that Butt pushed away.
The atmosphere became noticeably more subdued as news of Napoli’s opener spread around the ground and for a while the only significant noise came from the large Bayern Munich section.
The sense of anti-climax only deepened as it became apparent Napoli had doubled their lead, but City still wanted to go down fighting as Dzeko shot at Butt.
Nasri then had a tricky run halted by Butt before shooting wide from 20 yards.
