Clean bill of health for Trapattoni

The Republic of Ireland will head into their decisive World Cup play-off clash with France at full strength

The Republic of Ireland will head into their decisive World Cup play-off clash with France at full strength. There were no fresh injury problems for manager Giovanni Trapattoni as he conducted this morning’s training session at Malahide’s Gannon Park ahead of Wednesday’s encounter at the Stade de France in Paris.

Assistant boss Marco Tardelli said: “We have no injuries and we have a very high morale. There are no problems. We are ready for the next match.”

Ireland will jet out to Paris tomorrow trailing 1-0 in the tie after Saturday night’s first leg defeat at Croke Park.

Nicolas Anelka’s deflected 72nd-minute strike divides the two teams, who both know one of them is only 90 minutes - or possibly 120 if the Irish can take it to extra-time - away from next summer’s finals in South Africa.

Trapattoni did not speak to the media this morning but has already indicated there will be no tactical rethink as Ireland seek to overturn the deficit.

“I don’t want to concede five goals, three goals or two goals,” he said yesterday. “One-nil is enough to take it to extra-time and maybe penalties.

“This is a game for calm heads. Okay, take risks in the last few minutes, but if we go forward and concede goals, it’s finished.”

The thigh injury Eric Abidal picked up at Croke Park will keep him out of the second leg. The Barcelona defender played the full match as France took a 1-0 lead but has since been ruled out of the return match at the Stade de France.

Lyon midfielder Jeremy Toulalan has also left the French squad after he failed to recover from the hamstring injury which kept him out of the game in Dublin. France manager Raymond Domenech will not call up a replacement for either player.
