Portsmouth have signed veteran striker Andy Cole from Manchester City on a two-year contract.
The 34-year-old former England international passed his medical after Pompey agreed to pay City a fee which is officially undisclosed, but is believed will rise to £1million depending on his appearances for his new club.
Portsmouth also hope to sign Hajduk Split defender Niko Kranjcar ahead of the transfer deadline in a £3.5million deal.
Cole will link up with two other former England stars, David James and Sol Campbell, at Fratton Park.
He told the club's official website, www.pompeyfc.co.uk: "It's an opportunity for me to play for another two years and I hope to do my best for Portsmouth Football Club, score a few goals and get the club into the top 10 which is what they are aiming to do this season.
"The good thing about Fratton Park is that the fans are electric. I watched them when Arsenal came down and won, but at no stage did the fans have a moan or groan about the Portsmouth team, and they applauded Arsenal for playing so well. Things like that stick in your mind, they always get behind their team and give 100 per cent which is always a good thing.
"I know Jamo [David James], I know Sol and I've played with David Thompson as well which is always important when you come to a new club because you can fit in straight away. I know the club are trying to push forward, buying players and trying to start something new and I want to be a part of that."
The arrivals of Cole and Kranjcar - if confirmed - will take Pompey manager Harry Redknapp's tally of new signings this summer to eight.
Pompey took Portuguese midfielder Manuel Fernandes on a year-long loan deal from Benfica yesterday but if the 20-year-old international - who is not expected to play for at least six weeks - recovers from a groin injury and impresses at Fratton Park he will become the club's record signing at around £7million.
Kranjcar, 22, was being examined for Pompey at Croatia's training camp ahead of their Euro 2008 qualifier with Russia on Saturday.
Pompey have turned to him after losing out to Aston Villa in the race to sign Bulgarian star Stilian Petrov from Celtic.
Redknapp is satisfied Cole, who netted 10 goals in 20 appearances last season, has recovered from two knee operations and a calf injury that has kept him out of action since February 12.
Kranjcar has been in Croatia's side since he was a teenager and starred at the World Cup. The son of Zlatko Kranjcar, Croatia's coach at the World Cup, the Hajduk Split midfielder has been trailed by Juventus, Real Madrid and Celtic.
