Collingwood Cup holders UU Jordanstown survived a major scare against NUI Galway when the first round got underway at DCU yesterday.

Having scored late to force extra-time 10-man Jordanstown fell behind again before another late equaliser took the game to penalties before they triumphed 4-2.

Mick Gilmore put Galway ahead on 66 minutes after he latched on to a Rob Gaynor pass.  Gaynor then had a glorious chance to seal the tie 10 minutes from time but he missed an open goal with Jordanstown goalkeeper Sean Henry stranded.

With time running out the holders - having lost defender Mark Surgenor to a second yellow card - pulled level when Warner Mullen headed home a Julian Ward cross.

Galway again went ahead early in extra time when Mickey Crean's low drive beat Henry but Jordanstown refused to roll over, and this time it was Ward who finished with his head.

The shootout went Jordanstown's way and they now meet Dublin Institute of Technology in today's quarter-final.

DIT ran out 3-1 winners against the University of Limerick after leading by two Dave O'Sullivan strikes at the break. A Derek McCarthy penalty 10 minutes into the second half closed the gap, but Stephen Roche got a third for the Dublin college to make it safe.

UCC strolled to a comfortable 4-1 win over fancied Northern outfit Magee College, Derry.

In a close first half Cork lead 2-1 at the interval with goals from Stephen Tangey and Ciaran Forde while Tony McDaid hit the Magee goal.

The second half was all Cork and Aiden O'Mahony made sure of a place in the quarter-finals when he netted two further goals.

Alister Gordon's low drive and a Stephen Lowry penalty gave UU Coleraine an early lead over against Trinity College, Dublin.

TCD struck back with a second half Dave Reddin goal but Coleraine had done enough in the end.

They now go on to meet the hosts DCU who had little trouble accounting for a disappointing NUI Maynooth with goals from Kieran Kilkenny and Alan Donoghue.
