SOCCER: After guiding Sligo Rovers to European football for the first time since 1996, manager Paul Cook has resigned and leaves the Premier Division club by "mutual consent".

The 41-year-old took over from Rob McDonald in April 2007 with Rovers finishing sixth in the league in his first season in charge. Last year they improved to fourth to guarantee a start in Uefa Cup.

Rovers issued a brief statement today: “Sligo Rovers can confirm the departure of manager Paul Cook by mutual consent. The club would like to thank Paul for his contribution since joining the club and wish him well in the future.

“No further comment will be made at this time.”
