Cork City claim to be in a position to pay the outstanding €440,000 they owe to the Revenue Commissioners after Celtic confirmed they will honour a friendly fixture with the League of Ireland side in the coming months.

City are due in the High Court tomorrow morning where owner Tom Coughlan hopes “common sense will prevail” after he got reassurances from the Scottish club that they will partake in a lucrative friendly.

A statement released by the club this evening, read: “Cork City Football Club is delighted to have received confirmation from Celtic Football Club that they will play the club in a friendly match to raise much needed funds.

“In light of the circumstances in which the club finds themselves, this friendly match now confirms that we will have the ability to pay the outstanding balance owed to the Revenue.

“The club sincerely hope that common sense will prevail and the club will be given the opportunity to deliver on this.”

If granted a reprieve, at least, the Leesiders will be in action against Bray Wanderers at Turner’s Cross tomorrow evening, when they will be hoping for a big crowd as much as the three points.

The latter will have to be secured without Pat Sullivan and Robert Mezeckis after the pair were the latest squad members to leave the club, with the Latvian returning home and the former reportedly interesting Shamrock Rovers and Drogheda United.
