Tonight’s vital Premier Division clash between Shamrock Rovers and Cork City will go ahead as planned after the Cork players were paid wages owed to them this morning. The squad had threatened strike action if the outstanding monies were not paid by lunchtime today.
After Cork released a statement this afternoon claiming all payments had been made, there remained doubt over whether Danny Murphy had received what was owed to him.
After the full-back stayed in Cork to confirm his bank had received the money it emerged an administrational error had seen it deposited in another bank account. The problem was soon rectified and he followed his team-mates to Dublin in the company of PFAI General Secretary Stephen McGuinness.
“The PFAI confirm the players of Cork City Football Club have been paid as per the agreement with the club. Bank drafts were paid to all players before they departed for Dublin for their game against Shamrock Rovers tonight in Tallaght," a PFAI statement read this afternoon.
“There was an outstanding issue with only one player; that has now been resolved and the player is travelling to Dublin … and the player will join up with the rest of the squad this afternoon.”
Earlier today, Cork conceded there were some delays, but insisted all players had been paid.
“While there was a brief delay in the payment of wages due to some players, the club has remained in constant contact with the relevant bodies, along with players and management,” they said.
“Despite the difficulties we have encountered, Cork City has honoured all players’ contracts and has paid all backpay to all of our players resulting from the club entering Examinership under its previous owners.
“While it is regrettable that there have been occasions where players have not been paid on time, paying the players the terms agreed in their contracts remains the priority of Cork City, and all players are now paid up to date.”
The players are due to be paid next on November 7th, the day after the season ends, while they are due two more payments before December 21st.
