Derby are closing in on the signings of Robbie Savage and Laurent Robert as they step up their bid to avoid relegation from the top flight.

Savage, who was also understood to be a target for Sunderland manager Roy Keane, had been considering a move after failing to regain his place in the Rovers side following injury.

The club have also announced they expect former Newcastle star Robert to sign today.

News of the likely double capture comes on the day the club received international clearance to play another new signing, Argentinian striker Emanuel Villa. The 25-year-old Argentinian striker completed his £2million move to the Rams from Mexican side UAG Tecos last week.

Villa was paraded to the crowd before Sunday's FA Cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday and manager Paul Jewell is now looking forward to seeing him in action.

Jewell said: "I can't wait to see 'Tito' in a Derby shirt because he looks good in training. I'm sure he will be a big fans' favourite."
