League of Ireland:Derry City moved to within a point of League of Ireland Premier Division leaders Shamrock Rovers with a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Hoops at the Brandywell.
The homeside just about shaded the first period but had nothing to show for it at the break and they had Rovers goalkeeper Alan Mannus to thank for the breakthrough in the second half.
Daniel Lafferty’s 52nd minute free-kick was struck well but should have been gathered by Mannus. Instead, the goalkeeper allowed fumbled it into his own net to leave Rovers chasing the game.
They responded well and had their chances but found Derry stopper Gerard Doherty in inspired form at the other end.
Doherty pulled out an outstanding double save from Dean Kelly’s free and he then tipped Billy Dennehy’s effort on to the woodwork.
He had more to do at the death when he denied dangerman Gary Twigg from close range with a superb stop and the Candystripes took the points.
Bottom side Galway Unitedsuffered their 16th defeat in a row when they were beaten at the last place they won, Dalymount Park.
It took Christy Fagan just two minutes to break the deadlock for Bohemians, but the game wasn't wrapped up until Killian Brennan's 74th minute penalty.
Seán Houston also scored in the second minute for Bray Wanderersagainst UCDand their lead was doubled by Chris Shields a little over 20 minutes later.
Mick Leahy grabbed one back 11 minutes after the restart but Bray deservedly took the points to move into sixth, four points behind Bohs in fifth.
