Second division leaders Reading made sure of promotion to the Premier League by grinding out a 1-1 draw at Leicester City today.
With the top two sides guaranteed promotion, Reading have 92 points and cannot be caught by third-placed Watford, who have 72 points with six games left to play.
Founded 135 years ago, Reading will be playing in the English top flight for the first time in their history after a storming season under Steve Coppell. They have won 27 and lost only two of their 40 league games.
Iain Hume fired Leicester into the lead shortly before halftime, but Republic of Ireland striker Kevin Doyle's 85th minute equaliser settled Reading's nerves.
Sheffield United are second on 78 points after a comfortable 3-0 win over Southampton. Phil Jagielka gave his team a 38th-minute lead, Paul Ifill made it 2-0 on the stroke of halftime and Neil Shipperley's goal completed the win.
Watford stay third after a surprise 2-0 home defeat by Millwall.
The other playoff places for the remaining promotion slot are held by Crystal Palace, who stay on 67 points after losing 2-1 at Derby County, and Preston, who have 61 after a 0-0 draw with Plymouth.
