Everton 2-3 Chelsea:A stunning 87th-minute goal by
Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba earned Chelsea a 3-2 victory at
Everton today after the champions had twice trailed.
Even though a Tim Howard own goal and Frank Lampard's rasping drive had levelled efforts from Mikel Arteta and Joseph Yobo, Chelsea seemed certain to suffer another setback to their hopes of completing a title hat-trick.
However, that was until Drogba controlled Andriy Shevchenko's knock-down fully 40 yards out, then turned and let fly with an outrageous volley which flew over Howard and dipped into the net.
Khalid Boulahrouz was replaced by Wayne Bridge, although it was the simultaneous arrival of Andriy Shevchenko for Arjen Robben which attracted more notice.
The Ukrainian quickly embarked on a blistering run towards the Everton goal. Unfortunately the shot which followed flew about 10 yards wide, much to the delight of the home supporters. Within a minute, Shevchenko was falling over his own feet to gift Leon Osman possession.
Thankfully for Chelsea, not all their players are so abject and, when Salomon Kalou found Frank Lampard on the visitors' next attack, the England striker took aim with a 20-yard shot that gave Howard no chance as it flashed into the top corner.
Yet again, the visitors piled forward and Drogba struck a post with another smart shot on the turn as the pressure increased.
Everton did concede, but no-one could have predicted just how
the goal would come as henrique Hilario launched a long punt
forward which Shevchenko nodded down to
Drogba.
Fully 40 yards out, the striker controlled, turned, then let fly with a volley which flew over Howard and dropped into the net.
