Soccer: Drogheda United reached their initial fundraising target of €100,000 - within the space of one week - ahead of tomorrow's return to the High Court as the Premier Division side battles for survival.
The plan to raise €100,000 in such a short period was hatched by the club's enthusiastic and passionate chairman Vincent Hoey at a meeting with over 400 supporters in Drogheda' s Institute of Further Education last week.
The cash-stricken club were asked to come up with a figure in the region of €550,000 to ensure the club's survival. However, Hoey suggested raising €100,000 before tomorrow was more realistic and should enable the club to extend their period of examinership.
It is a credit to the supporters who have rallied for the cause as the country's most successful club in the last five years battles for survival.
"Drogheda United Football Club has reached its initial fundraising target of €100,000," today's statement on the club's website read. "The club wish to thank the unbelievable supporters for their fantastic fundraising efforts in the past week.
"To raise €100,000 in a week is an amazing feat and shows the extraordinary goodwill and generosity of the people of Drogheda."
