Ugo Ehiogu's proposed moved to West Brom collapsed tonight after the player failed to agree personal terms.
Albion were close to signing the 33-year-old Middlesbrough defender on an 18-month deal but now admit the transfer is off.
Chairman Jeremy Peace said: "We've done everything we can to make this deal happen but it's just not possible. The goalposts keep being moved and enough is enough.
"I'll be speaking to Bryan Robson to discuss alternative targets should he wish to pursue them."
Ehiogu was to join last week only for an injury to Gareth Southgate putting the deal in doubt.
Then Boro rejected a loan deal before agreeing to the sale in principle only for the two parties to fail to reach an agreement.
