Manchester United have missed out on the signing of Benfica midfielder Renato Sanches after the Portuguese today signed a five-yea deal with Bayern Munich.

United have been heavily linked with the promising 18-year-old who has made a fast rise through the ranks at the Stadium of Light this season and looks set for a place in the Portugal squad at Euro 2016.

However Sanches this morning signed a contract with the German champions who paid €35 million for his services.

This is despite the fact that United scouts are reported to have watched the midfielder in action over 20 times this season.

“We are delighted to have signed him,” said Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

“He is a dynamic, two-footed, combative and technically gifted midfielder who will strengthen our team further.”

It’s been a successful day for Bayern with the news coming shortly after confirmation that they have signed centre-back Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund, also on a five-year deal.
