Soccer - Europa League Review:It was a night of disappointment for Premier League sides in the Europa League as Liverpool and Manchester City both bowed out of the competition, as did Scottish Premier League side Rangers.
Liverpool exited with a whimper after a goalless draw at home to Braga, dealing a blow to their hopes of returning to the competition next season.
Trailing 1-0 from the first leg of their last-16 tie, even a first start for record signing Andy Carroll could not turn things around as the visitors employed every trick in the book to hang on to their advantage.
The Reds have not failed to qualify for Europe since 1999 but having lost the chance of entering as defending Europa League champions they must now look to their league form.
Ten-man City beat Dynamo Kiev 1-0 at Eastlands but it wasn't enough to stop them tumbling out of Europe.
City needed to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first leg but they were down to 10 men in the 36th minute when Mario Balotelli was handed a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Goran Popov.
They launched an immediate response and pulled a goal back in the 39th minute.
David Silva played a short free-kick to Aleksandr Kolarov and with the Dynamo defence standing off, the full-back cracked in a shot that went beyond the goalkeeper.
However, despite having the majority of possession City were unable to get the second goal they craved, with Dynamo going into tomorrow's quarter-final draw.
City manager Roberto Mancini admitted he hopes Balotelli is a frustrated man.
"I'm disappointed with the result because we deserved to score another goal, minimum," said Mancini. "We played a fantastic game with 10 players."
On Balotelli's needless dismissal, Mancini said: "I don't know, from the bench I didn't see it very well. But I think the other 10 players played a fantastic game for 60 minutes."
Asked whether the striker is frustrated by his sending-off, the Italian coach said: "I hope (so). Because I think with 11 players we would have won this game and got to the quarter-finals."
Rangers were hamstrung by an early away goal as their campaign ended against PSV Eindhoven. Jeremain Lens capitalised on some slack marking in the 14th minute to net the only goal of the tie from close range.
Rangers struggled in the immediate aftermath but they exerted some sustained second-half pressure, with Steven Naismith heading against the bar and Maurice Edu missing a great chance before appearing to have a goal-bound shot blocked by the hand of PSV midfielder Atiba Hutchinson.
