Everton pick up Jagielka

Everton have completing the signing of Phil Jagielka from Sheffield United

Everton have completing the signing of Phil Jagielka from Sheffield United. The Merseysiders have moved quickly following the Blades' confirmation as a Championship club after their failed arbitration bid.

That relegation triggered a clause in Jagielka's contract that means he can leave for £4million. He has signed a five-year deal.

The Toffees have agreed a deal with United for the England B international, and he was at Goodison Park this afternoon to complete formalities after agreeing personal terms.

Jagielka was on Everton's books as a schoolboy but was released a decade ago and had been with Sheffield United ever since. In total, he has made 287 appearances for the Bramall Lane club, scoring 22 goals.

Everton boss David Moyes wanted the deal concluded quickly, so that Jagielka can join his new team-mates at their St Andrews training camp in Scotland before the end of the week.

Sheffield United, meanwhile, launched a London High Court appeal against an arbitration panel's decision to dismiss their claim against the Premier League.

The panel yesterday turned down the Blades' claim for a new disciplinary commission to be set up to deal with West Ham over the Carlos Tevez affair.

United, who were relegated from the top flight on the last day of last season, are demanding the Hammers be docked points for breaching league rules on third-party agreements.
