The Football Association was today awaiting reports on the trouble which flared at the derby clash between Sunderland and Newcastle.

Twenty nine arrests were made after violent clashes before and after yesterday's 2-1 win for the Wearsiders.

However, perhaps more worrying were a series of incidents inside the Stadium of Light, which saw Newcastle keeper Shay Given confronted by two home fans after Kieran Richardson's winner, Joey Barton pelted with missiles and clashes between rival supporters after a pitch invasion on the final whistle.

An FA spokesman said: "We will look into the incidents. We are awaiting reports from the officials and gathering information.

"Invading the pitch is a criminal offence and we will be working with the clubs and the police to identify those responsible for encroaching on the pitch and missile throwing.

"Neither the police nor the individual clubs will tolerate people running on to the pitch or violence inside the stadium, and everyone will work together to make sure those individuals are identified."

Supporters found guilty of criminal offences could be banned from attending games in the future.

Barton was a particular target as he warmed up on the sidelines, with plastic bottles and coins being thrown in his direction.

He was asked to return to the dug-out by police and kissed his badge as he did so, further enraging those taunting him.

However, it is understood the 26-year-old is unlikely to face any action in connection with the incident.
