Attempts by Thomas Davis GAA club to prevent Shamrock Rovers using the Tallaght Stadium as a soccer-only facility will not succeed, Rovers chairman Jonathan Roche has warned.

Despite repeated Government assurances that the ground will be for soccer only, the Tallaght-based GAA club is adamant the facility should also cater for Gaelic Games.

Thomas Davis are seeking a judicial review of South Dublin County Council's decision last February to proceed with completion as a soccer-only facility.  Their action has already delayed construction at the venue.

The High Court will now hear the case on March 16th next.

Shamrock Rovers, without a home ground since the sale of Milltown in 1987, received a boost yesterday when the FAI said it would offer financial assistance towards their case.

"To have such full and public support of the FAI behind us means that Irish football is united on this issue," Roche said. "That support is most welcome.

"It's quite clear that there is a concerted effort to prolong the process as much as possible in order to prevent our senior team joining the rest of the club in Tallaght. But it won't succeed," he added.

The FAI want to see Shamrock Rovers playing in the Tallaght community "as soon as possible", chief executive officer John Delaney said.

"This week the board of the association pledged significant funds to the club in order to aid them in the most practical manner as they continue to pursue the goal of completion of Tallaght.

"These funds will be offset against the legal fees Rovers face as the High Court case continues. Obviously, we wish the club every success  in this matter."
