Bobo Balde returned to the heart of the Celtic defence. The Guinea international, who had only played two CIS Insurance Cup games this season after an operation in the summer to sure a stomach complaint, replaced Gary Caldwell who was ruled out with a knee injury.

In London, Freddie Ljungberg and Philippe Senderos returned to Champions League action for Arsenal against Hamburg as  Gilberto was left on the bench following his journey back home last week for family reasons.

Hamburg, without a point so far in Group G, were still without long-term casualties Juan Pablo Sorin, Guy Demel, Nigel de Jong and Vincent Kompany, but that did not stop coach Thomas Doll leaving experienced Serbian striker Danijel Ljuboja on the bench.

The German visitors had a familiar north London face in the starting line-up, former Tottenham defender Thimothee Atouba.
