Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has "not made a bid" for Franck Ribery and says he won't add to his team "just to be spectacular".
The France playmaker has made it clear he wants to leave Marseille, with the Gunners and Lyon vying for his signature.
But Wenger says he has yet to make a move, insisting: "I have not made a bid for Frank Ribery - I categorically deny that story. I have not made a bid for anybody. Will I? Frankly, I do not know.
"It depends if somebody goes or not - but even if somebody goes it is not sure I will make a bid for anybody. We have left an impressive list of players behind tonight.
"To add players to the team to just be spectacular, I am not going to do."
Meanwhile Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder is continuing his interest in Feyenoord striker Dirk Kuyt.
The Toon boss watched Kuyt score in the Dutch club's 2-0 friendly win over Middlesbrough at the weekend. And he says the World Cup striker is still in his sights after that performance.
He told Newcastle's official website: "I saw Dirk Kuyt on Sunday. I would have no reason to remove him, or a couple of my other targets, from my list. We will be studying him again at the weekend, like we are two or three other strikers.
"Which ends up at Newcastle I would not like to say at the moment. There is no certainty about any of the strikers we are looking at ending up coming here.
"He (Kuyt) played well and I didn't see any reason why we should not go and watch him again. But that dosn't mean we are going to be bidding for him, or that he is coming here."
Another striker linked with a move to Newcastle is Inter Milan's Obafemi Martins,
Roeder said of the Nigerian: "He is another very good player, different. He is very, very quick and strong."
Midfield is another Roeder could be looking to strengthen, and Real Madrid midfielder Thomas Gravesen is a possibility.
The Dane looks set to quit the Bernabeu imminently and Roeder said: "Other managers have expressed they would be interested in Thomas Gravesen.
"I don't mind being in competition with other clubs for players that I want. That would suggest they are highly valued.
"Damien Duff came here and he chose us in front of Tottenham and Liverpool, and that's absolute fact as Martin Jol reminded me when I saw him the other day."
