Uefa Cup round-up: Cork City left themselves with a mountain to climb if they are to progress to the next round after being held to a 2-2 draw by Finnish side FC Haka at Turner's Cross.
That the home side had battled back from 2-0 down may well prove irrelevant given that Haka, seasoned European campaigners at this stage, have two away goals in their back pocket.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 17th minute through Janne Mahlakaarto and when Toni Lehtinen added a second shortly after the interval the game looked up for Cork.
But a close range volley from Dave Mooney on 62 minutes and a Dan Murray header five minutes later breathed new life into the tie and Cork will at least travel to Finland knowing they have a fighting chance.
Ryan Guy had earlier secured a priceless away goal for St Patrick's Athletic as they embarked on their campaign with a 1-0 win over Olimps of Riga.
Guy's late header was no less than Johnny McDonnell's side deserved having dominated for long periods against a side reduced to 10 men with just eight minutes on the clock.
But McDonnell could yet regret not emerging with a more convincing victory as Alan Kirby, Jamie Harris and Glen Fitzpatrick were guilty of passing up scoring opportunities.
First-half goals from Martin Petrov and Dietmar Hamann, meanwhile, gave Manchester City a comfortable victory on new boss Mark Hughes' first match in charge of the Eastlands club.
The goals were fine, clinical finishes after nine and 28 minutes respectively, and should make the second-leg of this first qualifying round match at Barnsley on July 31st a formality.
City's lack of match-fitness showed after the break with the battling hosts at least making a game of it, but newly capped England goalkeeper Joe Hart was rarely troubled.
