Former Sweden goalkeeper Magnus Hedman has joined Chelsea until the end of the season to beef up cover while first-choice keeper Peter Cech recovers from a head injury, the club said today.
The 33-year old, who has played more than 50 times for
Sweden, will stay in London until the end of the season, the
English champions said in a statement.
"He will act as goalkeeper cover to Carlo Cudicini and
Hilario and will remain in that role when Petr Cech returns from
injury," the statement said.
Hedman, who played in Britain for Coventry City and Celtic
before retiring a year ago, has spent the last few days on trial at
Chelsea's training ground.
Manager Jose Mourinho said after Chelsea's 4-0 win over
Watford on Saturday that he had been impressed by the Swede's
attitude and technical ability.
Czech keeper Cech suffered a fractured skull during a Premier
League match against Reading last month and is likely to be out of
action for much of the season.
