Champions League round-up:  Injury-hit Arsenal forgot their indifferent domestic form to score a stunning away win over Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie while Liverpool lost out to a late Benfica winner in Portugal.

Thierry Henry scored the only goal in Madrid.  After 47 minutes the Frenchman embarked on a weaving run almost from the halfway line that took him past three Real challenges before firing wide of goalkeeper Ilker Casillas and into the far corner.

The goal was just reward for the way a largely depleted Arsenal side carried the game to Real in the first half, when they created three scoring chances in the opening 15 minutes, and then defended superbly against a largely uninspired Real strike force.

It was Real's first home defeat in European competition in 19 matches since October 2002 and the first ever to an English club at home in European competition.

The victory gives Arsenal a huge advantage in the tie which will be concluded with the second leg at Highbury in a fortnight.

Benfica defender Luisao powered home a late header to give his side a 1-0 win over European champions Liverpool.

The Portuguese champions, who had been ineffective all night, finally made the breakthrough when the Brazilian met a Petit free kick after 84 minutes.

Liverpool, who began with inspirational captain Steven Gerrard on the bench with a 'dead leg', had looked comfortable until Luisao got in front of Sami Hyypia to grab the winner.

It was the first goal Liverpool had conceded in the competition since September but they will still be confident of turning the tie around at Anfield.

Andriy Shevchenko struck with a penalty to give AC Milan a valuable 1-1 against Bayern Munich and wreck the German side's perfect home record.

Michael Ballack had given Bayern the lead with a stunning half-volley in the 23rd minute and the Germans were looking comfortable before a needless Valerien Ismael handball gave Shevchenko the chance to equalise 13 minutes after the break.

Bayern, who had won all 15 of their previous home matches in the Bundesliga, Cup and Champions League since a move into their new stadium, were without goalkeeper Oliver Kahn after he suffered a recurrence of his thigh injury in the warm-up.

Milan also finished the game without their first choice keeper, with Dida giving way to Zeljko Kalac in the 69th minute after the Brazilian's awkward fall.

With an away goal, Milan, six-times European champions and last season's beaten finalists, will be favourites going into the return leg in Italy.

Lyon beat PSV Eindhoven 1-0 after goalkeeper Gomes misjudged a 25-yard free kick from Juninho.

In a re-run of last season's quarter-final, won by PSV on penalties, the home side created the better chances.

Gomes's blunder proved decisive for the Dutch champions, however. They were unable to score despite playing the last 10 minutes with a man extra after Lyon's Sidney Govou was sent off 10 minutes from time.
