So tough has Hodgson's start to his Reds career been that rumours have circulated the club's American owners, New England Sports Ventures, are looking for a replacement.

Hodgson, though, is keen to point out he is still largely working with the squad he inherited from former boss Rafa Benitez, though he has underwhelmed with the signings of Christian Poulsen and Paul Konchesky.

However, since then Damien Comolli has arrived at Anfield as director of football strategy and it is thought he has the final say in who comes and goes at the club.

"I'm hoping that one day I will get a chance to stamp a little bit more of my authority and philosophy on the team by choosing some more of the players," he said. "Although it's not often mentioned I've not been that active in the transfer market since I've been here.

"The players here have done exceptionally well for me in accepting a new manager, but they are the ones you have watched for the past few years."
